The “An Officer and a Gentleman” actor was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award at Spain’s Goya Awards. During his speech, the actor who recently moved to Spain to be closer to his wife’s family, spoke about what is happening in the U.S. saying the country is in a “dark place.” “We have unfortunately elected officials that don’t inspire us in the way we want to be inspired,” Gere said to the audience. His goal is to make the world a better place. That's what Richard Gere said at the Zurich Film Festival this year, where he presented his documentary film ‘Wisdom of Happiness’. In a real sense, the film is a teaching by the Dalai Lama, in which he pleads for more compassion, addresses the future of our planet and shows what responsibility we have as human beings in these matters.

The first meeting between Richard Gere and the Dalai Lama dates back to 1982. Since then, Gere has dedicated himself wholeheartedly to Tibetan Buddhism and has also been active as a human rights activist, campaigning for the freedom of Tibet, among other things. However, as a child of Protestant Methodist parents, he was already taught to care for his fellow human beings and to have compassion for others.

He tells Olivia Röllin about the greatest happiness of human existence, life as a theatre play and a world community of brothers and sisters.
