When former fashion model Maddie Hayes goes broke and finds that one of her few remaining assets is ownership of the Blue Moon Detective Agency, she is tempted to liquidate it until she meets the quirky employees and gets involved in their even quirkier cases.

Moonlighting is an American comedy drama television series that aired on ABC from March 3, 1985, to May 14, 1989. The network aired a total of 67 episodes. Starring Cybill Shepherd and Bruce Willis as private detectives, the show was a mixture of drama, comedy, mystery, and romance, and was considered to be one of the first successful and influential examples of comedy drama, or "dramedy", emerging as a distinct television genre. The show is also credited with making Willis a star and relaunching Shepherd's career after a string of lackluster projects. In 1997, the episode "The Dream Sequence Always Rings Twice" was ranked #34 on (the 1997) TV Guide's 100 Greatest Episodes of All Time. In 2007, the series was listed as one of Time magazine's "100 Best TV Shows of All-Time". The relationship between the characters David and Maddie was included in TV Guide's list of the best TV couples of all time.

The 1985 romantic comedy television series Moonlighting made Bruce Willis a star and revitalized the career of actress Cybill Shepherd after a lull in the early part of the decade. Cybill had been a film star during the 1970s, and she had developed a bit of a diva mentality. This diva mentality clashed with Bruce’s more laid-back demeanor. However, Bruce started acting like a diva himself by the show’s end.

Cybill was hired onto Moonlighting first, and she read with nearly 20 actors before Bruce auditioned. Cybill felt the chemistry immediately, and Bruce was subsequently hired onto the show to be her costar. During the early days of the show’s production, Cybill reportedly initiated a romantic encounter between the two that ended with them making out at the actress’s house after sharing a bottle of wine. Before things got too far, the two decided to keep things professional.

Although Bruce and Cybill had apparently agreed amicably not to pursue a romantic relationship, this unresolved tension may have played a part in the two starting to not get along over the course of the show’s filming. By the end of the show’s run, Bruce and Cybill could hardly look each other in the eye. In addition to issues with the show’s writing and budget, this feud led to its cancellation. It's Christmas and Blue Moon has to work. The staff are not happy. Maddie is also under pressure and says she regrets keeping the agency open. Her guardian angel approaches her and shows her how life would have been if she had done this.
