Why was Princess Diana loved and loved all over the world? Diana bore little resemblance to any member of the royal family. Quite open, direct and relaxed, quite unlike either her prim husband or Queen Elizabeth, who was seen as a state symbol. Diana did much to bring the royal family closer to the people, and much of her success was due to her charitable work. She was one of the first celebrities to address HIV and AIDS, at the time a stigmatised disease that meant certain death. She was photographed and shook hands with HIV-positive people, even though in the late 1980s even doctors were hesitant to touch them. Her visit to the prevention centre in 1991 is well known: Diana hugged patients, shook their hands and kissed them. Diana has also supported victims of landmines, taken an interest in palliative care and many other aspects of charity work that have not often been on the royal family's radar before.
