What’s your favorite moment from I Dream of Jeanie? The iconic show was a major part of many childhoods.

Supernatural sitcoms were a dime a dozen in the 60s, and Bewitched was the queen. Sidney Sheldon took on the challenge of giving it a worthy competitor. I Dream of Jeannie starred Barbara Eden and Larry Hagman. They were a genie and master who also had a forbidden attraction. The leaders of NBC didn’t believe it could succeed and refused to pay for color film. Fans eventually proved them wrong. Its first season was the second most-watched TV show in the US. It never topped the rating boards after that but was still a beloved staple until one fateful choice took it all away.

The show’s publicity department had a reputation for pulling elaborate stunts to hook viewers such as guessing random locations that their characters wound up on. One of them backfired in a major way; a fake wedding to promote a real wedding episode. Almost the entire cast and crew had warned producer Mort Wagner that marrying off the characters would kill the show’s charm. He made the episode anyway, and the show ended after its fifth season. They had a better ending lined up. A clip show that turned out to be a dream would have left room for the will-they-won’t-they romance to live on.

Barbara Eden is the only surviving cast member, but the show lives on in syndication right next to its competitor Bewitched. Its theme will forever be remembered for ushering in color television. Jeannie’s iconic bottle is even a popular exhibit in the Smithsonian.
