A heartbreaking plane crash. and a ₹4000 crore insurance claim but who’s actually paying for it?

In this video, we talk about one of the saddest incidents in Indian aviation, the recent Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad. While the families are going through a huge personal loss and Air India’s image has been badly affected, there’s also a big financial loss involved that many people don’t know about.

The aircraft was insured by TATA AIG and GIC General Insurance, but here’s the twist: the ₹4000 crore claim will mostly be paid by a foreign reinsurance company. Out of the total claim, ₹1000 crore is for the aircraft and ₹3000 crore is for the families and third parties affected.
TATA AIG smartly reinsured the risk with a foreign company, meaning most of the payout responsibility doesn’t fall on them. GIC, India’s state-owned insurer, is only covering 5% of the total amount.

Do you think Indian insurance companies should cover more or rely on foreign reinsurers?
